I have served as Walmart’s vice president of global finance technology and innovation for nearly five years. When you are in a position to lead engineers and technologists, and you are striving to advance the capabilities of a company or a function, you have to understand what is feasible and possible technically. How Upskilling Helps Senior Leadership

As a senior leader, you should know what your weaknesses are, and you should always choose to fill those gaps. Technology has taken a quantum leap in the last five years. There have been many changes, such as the ability to move massive amounts of data, the cloud, sharing computers across different geographies, accessing vast amounts of data, and synthesizing that data into something meaningful quickly. Although you can understand the theoretical component of it at a high level, knowing the actual technology behind it can give you a better framework of what’s possible. Knowing that is what upskilling does for anyone. 

Professionals Need to Stay on Top of Change

Yes, the expectation is that we all should seek opportunities to get better. If you are not improving yourself, you fall further and further behind daily. If you are not going forward, everyone else is leaving you behind. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to take a year-long program, but the dedication to improve and grow in specific areas is important.

Data Science Can Improve Business Insights 

If you choose to upskill yourself, you already know that there is some deficit. I admit that I needed to upskill. I am in numerous business meetings where we discuss daily challenges. The challenges today are far more complex and require a significant amount of understanding. You have to know how the manipulation or acquisition of data can be applied to a given process. It can improve insights, get financial results, or help make determinations. I realized that data science is one methodology we can apply. It helped me to have that context and understand the process and steps needed to accomplish those goals.

Having a job that you are interested in and one that keeps you enthusiastic is relatively vital to boost work productivity. I did not realize this not until I lost my will to even continue my job. It had become a repetitive task that I no longer was satisfied with. So, that was the time I felt the need to literally upskill and choose another career path. 

The Journey 

I graduated from KCG College of Technology in Mechanical Engineering in 2016. Currently, I work as a Data Scientist at Ford Motor Company and live in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I started my career by working as a Machine Learning Data Associate at Amazon in 2019. Later in June 2021, I became a Data Science Engineer at VuNet Systems. 

I am skilled in Machine Learning, Statistical Data Analysis, Machine Learning Algorithms, PostgreSQL, Data Analytics, Tableau, Microsoft SQL Server, SQL python, R (Programming Language), and RStudio. While working as a Data Engineer, I developed, built, experimented and maintained databases and large-scale processing systems. 

After nearly working for 4 years in the Machine Learning Data and Data Science Engineer field, I can feel that I am not as passionate as I used to be. As I was not getting any sense of full work satisfaction, I looked for other career opportunities. I am aware that Data Science is a thriving domain with plenty of work opportunities, so I wanted to move my career into the Data Science domain.

I enrolled in the Data Scientist Masters Program offered by Simplilearn to upgrade myself and learn new skills. I also completed Machine Learning Advanced Training and Tableau Desktop 10 Qualified Associate courses to upskill myself.

I am Suraj Chander, currently working in a new job at Aideas Engineering Pvt. Ltd. my career switch from Mechanical Engineering to Data Analyst began at my first job. I finished my BTech in Mechanical engineering in 2018 from Alliance University. My professional expertise revolves around analyzing detailed reports to increase the business’s sales revenue. Having experienced and finalized my career path, I like to learn more about trends and updated tools. I was at your place, too, until I thought of making a career in Data Science to know the ins and outs of it and how the system works.

The Journey

I’m a young professional from Fatehpur living in New Delhi with my mother and elder brother. I did my MBA in Marketing and Human Resources from IPS Business School, Jaipur, in 2021. However, being an MBA in Marketing and HR, I needed to upskill myself in data analytics to pursue it as a career path. I’m currently working as a full-time Data Analyst at one of the leading multinational companies. In my work life of 2 years, I’ve worked for several companies as a Data Analyst. 

I’m highly encouraged and motivated towards Data. Data Visualisation, Data Cleaning, and Data Analysis are some of my abilities in Python, and R. My MBA with Marketing and Human Resources abilities allow me to engage with individuals and learn about their market perspectives, thanks to my decision to upskill myself with a Data Analytics course. I am a great admirer of cricket. Yet the analytical graphs about a player’s or team’s performance, audience votes, and so on piqued my interest more than the game itself. At that point, I chose to pursue a career in data science, and because my MBA was in Marketing and Human Resources, I required another learning platform to grasp Data Science. The Result

After completing the Simplilearn Data Analyst Master’s Program, I landed my first-ever job as a data analyst at UST Global. However, due to a family urgency, I had to drop that job soon. I have been a professional data analyst for around two years with various organisations. Currently, I am working for a Sweden-based multinational corporation as an IT Analyst, a job I landed after completing the Masters in Data Analytics course from Simplilearn.

I completed my Bachelors’s in Economics from Stella Naris College in 2017 and worked as an accessibility tester at Cognizant.
